Surrey International Institute

Director, English Language Programme

The Surrey International Institute (SII) is seeking a full-time Director to lead the faculty in the delivery of an accredited English language programme in Dalian, China.

SII is a Joint Sino-Foreign Cooperative School set up by Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE) and the University of Surrey (UoS) in the UK. SII was approved in 2007 by the Ministry of Education and currently has over 1500 students enrolled in business and tourism management programmes. The structure of the programmes currently follow a 2+2 format whereby students complete the first two years of a DUFE business programme while concurrently studying English and then, on meeting performance criteria and an overall IELTS score of 6.5 with 6.0 or more in sub-categories, can continue into the final two years of the relevant University of Surrey programme. The English language curriculum is scheduled across the initial two years, though continued support is provided in the latter years. Key targets include preparing students to effectively study in an English learning environment at university level and to pass the IELTS tests for entry into the UoS programmes.

The Director position is the senior academic post for the English Language programme and will report to the Associate Dean of SII. The post holder will be responsible for the leadership of the faculty staff, maintaining the integrity of the curriculum and achievement of relevant Institute targets. Accordingly, it is preferred that the incumbent holds a PhD in linguistics or similar, must have proven leadership experience at a recognised university and is familiar with the UK approach to quality assurance.

Also, the incumbent must be able to effectively work with administrators on the planning and delivery aspects of the programme, especially the Registry Office and Human Resources. Experience of working in an international environment, preferably China, would be advantageous. Finally, experience in curriculum design would be helpful.

Job Summary and Purpose

The key purpose of this role is to provide leadership of the English language faculty and maintain the integrity of the curriculum to ensure SII students are able to meet relevant IELTS targets set by the University of Surrey and are adequately prepared to effectively study in a university-level English language learning environment.

Main Responsibilities/Activities

•    To support the Dean and Associate Deans in the facilitation of strategic or tactical plans and the meeting of any associated targets.

•    To provide regular reports on nominated activities to the line manager

•    To provide academic leadership maintaining the integrity of the accredited curriculum in line with the programme specifications, module descriptions and university policies.

•    To provide academic leadership in quality assurance and enhancements in the delivery of the English language programme.

•    To develop a vibrant learning culture that is considerate of students' educational backgrounds and that embraces a nurturing, cheerful and stimulating environment.

•    To foster a professional academic culture amongst staff that is tolerant, progressive and engaged in scholarship.

•    To support and assist the "Blue Wings Club" - the English language student group - to develop extracurricular activities that contribute to student members' development

•    To represent the faculty and students at various Boards and Committees, as detailed below

•    To build esprit de corps amongst staff and encourage organisational citizenship behaviours

•    Developing and maintaining a mentor programme to support junior staff

To support Learning and Teaching by:

•    Ensuring a systematic peer evaluation of teaching is implemented each semester with the purpose of developing staff and improving the quality of teaching.
